“I have been involved with the YSOECI since I was 17. That’s five years! It brings me so much joy to see new and familiar faces every semester. Although I am not a music major or minor, I love to surround myself with music and I am lucky to be a part of such a wonderful asset to the community. The students’ hard work and willingness to connect, both to each other and to music, creates beautiful moments in rehearsal and performances which never fail to make me indescribably joyful and proud.”

“Hi! My name is Andrew, and I play the French Horn. I’ve been playing the French Horn for eight years. I don’t just play the Horn though. I can also play the trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, and the recorder too. I practice every day, and it is going extremely well. But I don’t just play music, I also have other things I love to do as well. I read a lot, I write articles and blogs, and I interpret the Spanish language for online companies. My favorite composer is probably Franz Joseph Haydn. I can’t wait to see you all next semester!”

Staff Goodbye: Megan Simmons

My name is Megan Simmons, and I’ve been playing violin for 12 years. I am 22 years old, and I will be attending the University of Oregon in the fall for a master’s in Violin Performance with a pedagogy specialization. I took a small break after my senior recital and am now working on specific technique in Dont etudes and Paganini Caprice No. 13, and I plan on learning some more Bach. To motivate myself to practice during quarantine, I watch YouTube videos of violinists like Kerson Leong and David Oistrakh since they have amazing tone. I spend a lot of time with my family and cats, and like to lie out in the sun when it’s out. I would like to thank everyone who has been with me through my undergrad journey at Ball State, and I am really going to miss my friends, staff, and students! I am sad I could not say a proper goodbye this senior year, but if anyone wants to talk this summer, I am free and would love that!

“My primary instrument is cello, and I’ve been playing for 8 years. I’m currently learning how to play and teach the violin. I’m 20 years old and a junior at Ball State. Practicing has definitely been a challenge during this quarantine. Having to practice during such uncertain times can feel unsettling, but playing my instrument has been a form of therapy.
